Hockey Drops Harris Cup Opener at #1 Adrian, 3-2

ADRIAN, Michigan – Freshman Garrett Gintoli and senior Jerad Tafoya scored goals as the MSOE hockey team fell short against No. 1 Adrian in the opening game of a Harris Cup Quarterfinal series Friday evening at Arrington Ice Arena.

The fourth-seeded Raiders (11-13-2) scored first and led for just over four minutes before the Bulldogs (22-4) scored three unanswered goals to take control of the game.

Senior Zach Woodman made 30 saves in goal on the night.

Gintoli opened the scoring at 5:00 of the opening period, striking for an all-rookie goal with assists from fellow first-year players Brady Chin and Stian Owens.

The lead held until Adrian opened the scoring 4:25 later. The home team would take the lead at 3:50 of the second period on the first of two Taylor McCloy goals in the game. This score came on the power play. McCloy struck again with the eventual game-winner at 4:44 of the third period to make it 3-1.

Tafoya gave MSOE new life with a power play goal at the 8:08 mark of the final frame. He lit the lamp off assists from senior Zach Simpson and freshman Adam Ostrowski.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Raiders would get.

The Bulldogs held a 33-24 shot advantage in the game. Both teams scored once with the man advantage, with the Red & White getting four chances and Adrian five tries on the power play.

The series wraps up Saturday at AIA. MSOE is looking to even the series and force a mini-game with the chance of advancing to the Harris Cup Semifinals.
