ST. PAUL, Minnesota - Sophomore Stian Owens notched the game-winning goal 47 seconds into overtime to send the MSOE hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Bethel Thursday night at Bethel University Arena.
The Raiders (3-6-1) had led 2-0 into the second period before the Royals (1-11-1) rallied to tie the game and force the extra period.
At a change of possession, sophomore Jeff Makowski pounced on a loose pass among the Bethel defense, knocking the puck free in the attacking zone. Owens then picked up the puck and beat the goalie with a back-hand shot.
Makowski also registered a goal of his own, opening the game's scoring late in the first period. He netted a power-play score at the 18:56 mark with assists to junior Evan Kearns and sophomore Adem Arifi.
Sophomore Garrett Gintoli then doubled the advantage, 5:45 into the second period. With the Raiders playing a man down, Gintoli forced a turnover at the top of the defensive zone, leading to a breakaway opportunity where he calmly deposited a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0.
The Royals then rallied for back-to-back goals in less than two minutes to level the score. The hosts got on the board at 14:02. They then made it 2-2 at 15:43 during a 4-on-3 power play.
The teams skated in a scoreless third period, despite a 12-3 shooting advantage for the Red & White, necessitating the extra period.
Sophomore Rock Boynton picked up the win in goal, making 19 saves on the night.
MSOE outshot Bethel 37-21 on the night. Both teams netted one power-play goal with five chances for the Raiders and six for the Royals.
The Red & White returns to the ice back in the Twin Cities Dec. 14 at Hamline.
