FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – Sophomore Rock Boynton made 31 saves for his first collegiate shutout in a 3-0 victory over No. 13/15 Marian Thursday afternoon at the Blue Line Center.
Three different players scored goals for the Raiders (5-6-2, 3-3-1 NCHA) as they picked up their second win over a ranked opponent this season against the nationally-ranked Sabres (7-6-2, 5-3 NCHA).
Kearns opened the scoring at 14:23 of the first period, redirecting a shot from sophomore Jeff Makowski. The goal came just after a power play as the Raiders continued to pressure the MU net.
Ferguson doubled the lead in the second period, capitalizing on a change of possession in the neutral zone. Freshman Stuart Harley started the play and Ferguson worked a give-and-go with sophomore Will Gauthier across the blue line to set up the shot at 12:24.
Rogers then put the game out of reach just 2:16 into the final period, cleaning up a loose puck in front of the Sabres' goal. Sophomore Stian Owens picked up the assist.
Boynton registered his first shutout in his 18th start. It was his second win against a ranked opponent this season as he was in goal for MSOE's 3-2 win over No. 1/1 St. Norbert Nov. 3.
The Raiders outshot Marian 24-17 through two periods before the hosts pushed to get on the board with a 14-4 advantage in the third period. MU finished with a 31-28 shot lead for the game. Both teams finished 0-for-2 on power plays as there were just six penalties in the game, three each way.
MSOE has the weekend off before returning to the ice Tuesday at Lawrence.
