MILWAUKEE - Six different players scored goals and junior Evan Kearns tallied three assists as the MSOE hockey team defeated St. Scholastica 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (6-8-3, 4-4-2 NCHA) overcame an early 2-0 with five unanswered goals to overpower the visiting Saints (9-7-1, 4-5-1 NCHA) and forge a split on the weekend.
Junior Nick Redmon, sophomores Adam Ostrowski, Stian Owens, and Will Gauthier, and freshmen Adam Czarnecki and Brandon Turer were the goal-scorers in the game. Redmon, Ostrowski, and Turer added assists, as well.
St. Scholastica got the scoring started with back-to-back goals midway through the opening period. Scores at 11:10 and 14:48 of the period put MSOE at a 2-0 deficit but the Red & White responded resoundingly.
Ostrowski got the Raiders on the board just 1:54 later to halve the deficit before the end of the period.
To start the second frame, it was all MSOE. Czarnecki, Redmon, and Owens each scored goals just 2:01 apart to thrust the hosts into the lead 4-2 with just 6:20 gone in the period.
Turer put the game out of reach with an insurance goal just 41 seconds into the third period to make it 5-2.
The Saints would pull a goal back to make the game interesting at 8:44 of the final period. They were unable to make any progress before pulling the goalie with 1:46 remaining but Gauthier took advantage of the empty net to effectively end the game with exactly one minute of regulation remaining.
Sophomore Rock Boynton made 33 saves in the game for the win
MSOE finished with a 39-36 shot advantage and converted on 1-of-7 power-play opportunities. CSS finished 1-for-4.
The Raiders return to the ice Friday at Adrian.
