Hockey Finishes Strong to Complete CUW Sweep

MEQUON, Wisconsin – Freshman Brendan Ferguson scored the go-ahead goal and senior Michael Romund scored for the fourth-straight game sot lead the MSOE hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Concordia Wisconsin Saturday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The Raider (7-11-4, 5-7-3 NCHA) completed a weekend sweep with a pair of third-period goals after the Falcons (7-12-3, 5-8-2 NCHA) overcame a 3-0 deficit.

Romund struck twice while junior Evan Kearns and sophomore Stian Owens also scored goals in the game. Freshman Adam Czarnecki chipped in a pair of assists.

MSOE jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with Owens opening the scoring at 11:23 off an assist from sophomore Jeff Makowski. Owens then assisted on a shorthanded goal by Kearns just over six minutes later.

Romund then tacked on another goal just 1:05 into the second period to make it 3-0.

Concordia got back into the game just over five minutes later with the first of three second-period goals. A power play strike came at 6:35 and the team's second goal just 50 seconds later. CUW then pulled level with another power-play goal just 15 seconds before the buzzer.

Ferguson gave the Raiders the lead for good at 6:13 of the third period at 4-3. Romund added an insurance goal at 13:45.

Sophomore Rock Boynton made 23 saves in goal for the win.

MSOE finished with a 29-26 shot advantage in the game after a dominating first period in which it outshot CUW 14-3 in building its initial advantage. The Red & White was shut out in six power plays while the Falcons struck for a pair of power play goals in five chances.

The Raiders, who defeated CUW 4-3 on Friday night, has moved three points ahead of Concordia in the NCHA South Division standings for the fourth and final Harris Cup Playoff spot. Two games remain in the regular season. The Red & White trails Aurora by just one point for the division's No. 3 seed.

MSOE closes out the regular season next weekend, hosting Trine Friday and No. 10 Adrian Saturday.
