Lacrosse Falls Short Against Whittier 12-9

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Three different players scored two goals and junior Clay Gustafson tallied four assists as the MSOE lacrosse team dropped a tough 12-9 decision to Whittier Friday evening at Southwestern University.

The Raiders (0-2) tied the score 9-9 early in the fourth quarter but the Poets (2-1) scored the final three goals of the game to pull away.

Juniors Jake Carney, Thomas Reid, and Oliver Winsor scored two goals each for MSOE. Gustafson notched one goal and a career-high four assists.

Ashton Pieris and Ryland Clay scored three goals each for Whittier.

Freshman Jack Collins scored a goal with just seven seconds to go in the third quarter to pull the Raiders within 9-8 and Gustafson tallied an up goal just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game.

The Poets responded with two goals in a 29-second span beginning at 12:23 to take the lead for good. They added an insurance goal inside the last two minutes.

Both teams scored four goals in the first period before MSOE held a 2-1 edge in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead into halftime. Whitter pulled ahead with four of the first five goals of the second half for a 9-8 lead.

Junior Pat Collins played in goal for the Red & White and finished with 13 saves on the night. Alex Cramer stopped 11 shots for WC.

Shots were 44-26 in favor of the Poets, who also won 15-of-22 face-offs.

The Raiders return to action Wednesday at North Central (Ill.).
