ASHLAND, Wisconsin – Three different players tallied hat tricks and senior Thomas Reid surpassed 100 career points as the MSOE lacrosse team opened the 2018 season with a 19-2 defeat of Northland Wednesday afternoon at Ponzio Stadium.
The Raiders (1-0) scored inside the first minute of the match on their way to eight first-quarter goals against the Lumberjacks (1-2) and never looked back.
Senior Clay Gustafson scored a game-high four goals, including three-straight in a 4:20 span to close out the first quarter, and added an assist. Junior Jack Fisher also finished with five points on three goals and two assists while sophomore Collin Fischer struck for three goals.
Reid scored two goals and added an assist to finish the day with 101 points. He's the third Raider to surpass the 100-point mark, following Gustafson and Brent Finnegan (2012-15).
MSOE scored at regular intervals throughout the first quarter, then settled for two goals in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead into halftime. The team's run of unanswered goals to open the game reached 13-0 before the Jacks got on the board.
The lead reached 16-1 before another NC goal late in the fourth quarter and the Red & White closed out the contest with two more goals.
Senior Oliver Kennedy and sophomore Harrison Davies added two goals each as nine different players found their way onto the scoresheet. Freshman Nick Tomaso had a team-high 10 ground balls while sophomores Jacob Killian and Brett Laffey caused two turnovers each.
MSOE outshot Northland 56-11 and controlled the ground balls 63-40. There was also a sizable 34-15 advantage in turnovers slanted towards the Red & White.
The Raiders return to action Saturday at Kalamazoo.
