MONMOUTH, Illinois – The MSOE lacrosse team pulled away from Monmouth in a 13-4 victory to register its school-record ninth win of the season Wednesday evening at Woll Field.
The Raiders (9-1, 2-1 MLC) broke a 2-2 tie with four-straight goals heading into halftime and, after the Scots (5-5, 2-2 MLC) opened the second half scoring, they scored seven unanswered goals to run away with the victory.
Five different players scored twice for MSOE in seniors Thomas Reid, junior Jack Fisher, sophomores Collin Fischer and Harrison Davies, and freshman Quinn Erdmann. Senior Clay Gustafson registered four assists in the game to break his own school record for assists in a season (27) with 29 already through just 10 games.
Senior Pat Collins made seven saves for the second-straight match to register another victory in goal.
Despite being outshot 9-5 in the first quarter, the Raiders led 2-0 after the first quarter on goals by Fisher and Davies. Monmouth scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to tie the game at 2-2 before the Red & White got rolling.
Erdmann scored the go-ahead goal at 4:29 of the quarter and MSOE followed with three more goals in a 1:17 span heading into the final minute of the first half for a 6-2 halftime lead. Four different players tallied goals in the frame, with Reid and Davies striking just 14 seconds apart.
The Scots looked to get back into the game with the first goal of the second half at 11:36 but Reid quickly negated that goal just 10 seconds later. Sophomore Brett Laffey won the face-off and registered the assist on the play. It was the first of three goals in the third period and four more to open the scoring in the fourth quarter as the Raiders put the game away at 13-3.
Monmouth added a consolation goal inside the final minute of regulation.
The Raiders finished with a 36-24 shot advantage and 35-23 edge in ground balls on the night. Laffey won 15-of-20 face-offs and both teams committed 19 turnovers.
MSOE returns to the field Saturday, hosting Concordia Chicago at Viets Field.
