MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Joey Schauer scored within a minute on each side of halftime to propel the MSOE men's soccer team to a NACC-opening 3-2 victory over Edgewood Wednesday night at the Reddan Soccer Complex.
The Raiders (5-2, 1-0 NACC) got all three goals from the tandem of Schauer and freshman Rade Novakovich in downing the Eagles (5-3, 0-1 NACC) on the road.
The duo has accounted for 13 goals and six assists over the last five games, including three in each of the last two contests.
Novakovich opened the scoring in just the fourth minute, registering his eighth goal of the season. He was assisted by Schauer.
Edgewood pulled a goal back on a diving header in the 40th minute before Schauer closed out the first half with a score of his own. He found himself on the end of freshman Konrad Knap's corner kick and put the ball in the back of the net from five yards out. The score came just seven seconds before the intermission.
Right after the break, Schauer went right back to work. This time, Novakovich fed him with a pass and he converted from 15 yards out to make it 3-1 just 46 seconds into the second half.
The goal would stand up as the winners as the Eagles pulled a goal back less than four minutes later to make it 3-2 with just over 40 minutes remaining.
The Red & White defense stood resolute, denying an equalizer to the home side despite its 12 shots in the period.
Freshman Ron Marchionna made five saves to preserve the win for the Raiders.
Both teams took 18 shots in the game and combined on 17 corner kicks (9-8, Edgewood).
MSOE returns to the field Saturday, hosting Illinois Tech at Viets Field.
