MILWAUKEE – Junior Logan Baerenwald had 15 kills and senior Ed Krupski added 10 as the No. 14 MSOE men's volleyball team avenged a season-opening loss with a three-set sweep of Cardinal Stritch 25-17, 25-17, 25-21, Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (12-2) opened the season with a five-set defeat at the hands of the Wolves (18-5) but hit .333 in the rematch to earn a split in the season series.
Joao Neto Sales finished with nine kills to lead Stritch and Caleb Moore chipped in six.
Each of the three games began tightly with MSOE then pulling away. In the first set, it hit .484 and broke a 10-10 tie with a 7-2 run to jump out to a 17-12 lead. The visitors pulled within three at 18-5 but the Red & White responded with seven of the last nine points to take the game.
In set two, the Wolves led 7-5 when a five-point spurt gave the Raiders a 10-7 advantage. They pushed that lead as high as five at 19-14 and still led 20-17 when they scored the final five points to open a 2-0 lead in the match.
The teams matched each other point for point for much of the third game with the teams separated by no more than two points for much of the period. Stritch pulled within 19-18 when MSOE put together another run, this time four-straight points to open a 23-18 lead. After the teams traded points, the Wolves fended off a pair of match points before succumbing on one more Baerenwald kill.
In addition to an efficient offensive attack, the Raiders' defense was also in fine form with 44 digs over just three sets and 10 total blocks. Sophomore Brian Jones finished with five blocks (one solo) to lead the charge and help limit CSU to just .106 attacking for the match.
MSOE returns to the court Friday at Fontbonne.
