ST. LOUIS – Senior Scott Boyk tallied 10 kills on just 12 attacks as the No. 14 MSOE men's volleyball team swept Fontbonne 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 Friday evening at MABEE Gymnasium.
The Raiders (13-2, 9-1 MCVL) completed the season sweep of the Griffins (9-10, 4-9 MCVL) and posted their third-straight league sweep.
Boyk hit a robust .750 in the match with just one error among his 12 attacks while playing just two sets. Junior Sam Stealey, a St. Louis native who had a match-best 13 kills when these teams last met, tallied eight kills in the match without an error, hitting .444.
Stephen Lendy was Fontbonne's top scorer with six kills in the match.
MSOE set the tone early in the opening game, jumping out to an 11-5 lead and never looking back. It closed out the first set with four of the final five points.
The Griffins rebounded in the second frame to give the Red & White all it could handle. The score was back and forth with the home team playing from the lead for much of the game. Fontbonne had tied the score at 23-23 when freshman Jake Christensen made it set point with a kill and an attack error gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final game looked like it was going to be another tight period but a 9-2 run expanded MSOE's 10-8 lead to a 19-10 advantage. That would be enough as the Red & White held the Griffins at bay down the stretch.
The Raiders put together a fairly efficient match with a .298 attack percentage and 40 kills over three sets. Meanwhile, they limited Fontbonne to just .063 attacking with 20 kills against 15 errors.
MSOE continues its two-match road trip Saturday at Greenville.
