OLIVET, Michigan – The No. 14-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team tied a school record with its 18th win of the season as it swept past Olivet 25-17, 25-10, 25-21, Friday evening at the Cutler Event Center.
The Raiders (18-3, 14-2 MCVL) defeated the Comets (2-17, 0-15 MCVL) on the road to reach 18 wins for the second-straight season and third time in team history (2012).
MSOE steadily pulled away from Olivet in the first frame, going on a run each time the home team pulled close. It led 11-9 before a quick 5-1 spurt opened a 16-11 lead. Then, when OC pulled within 20-16, it was another 5-1 stretch to end the game.
In the second set, a sizable 17-2 run sent the Raiders out to a decisive 2-0 lead in the match. The stretch broke open a 6-4 Red & White lead to make it 23-7 before the home team had a little 4-1 run to reach double-digits in the set.
The Raiders were less decisive in the third set, overcoming an early deficit for a 9-8 lead when it got some breathing room with a small 5-1 run. The teams traded points before four-straight Red & White points made it 21-14. The Comets fought back with a 7-2 run of their own to push the score to 23-21. But, Christensen answered with a kill and sophomore Brian Jones had a service ace to finish off the sweep.
MSOE attacked .385 over the first two sets, committing just two errors in each frame, before finishing at .266 for the night after a rough third set. The team also tallied 10 service aces in the match. Olivet was limited to a .039 hitting percentage for the match, with just 19 kills against 16 errors.
The Raiders continue their road trip through the Michigan league schools Saturday at Adrian. The teams face off at 10 a.m. central time.
