BATAVIA, Ohio – The MSOE rowing team narrowly missed out on top honors in the Petite Final of the Ralph Lindamood Cup by just 0.6 seconds in a heavily-contested race to highlight its competition Sunday at the MACRA Championships Sunday.
The Raiders finished second with a time of 6:38.5 in the Varsity 8 Petite Final race. Three teams finished within 1.3 seconds of each other at the top of the heat, with MSOE's time just 0.6 seconds off Case Western's lead pace. Ohio State took third in the race just 0.7 seconds back of the Red & White.
MSOE also boasted a third-place finish by its Varsity 4 in the Grand Final of the Judson Ross Cup. The Raiders finished just 5.8 seconds back of OSU and 1.7 behind Michigan with a time of 7:38.5. The boat had qualified for the Grand Final after winning its heat by 4.3 seconds ahead of Miami (Ohio).
The Varsity 4 'B' crew was third in the Petite Final with a time of 7:53.4, fishing behind Chicago and Michigan but ahead of Ohio State's 'B' entry. The Raiders' second entry in the race placed fourth in its qualification heat with a time of 7:53.4.
There were two other varsity crews to compete in their respective grand finals. The Raiders placed sixth in the Grand Final of the Al Belovarac Cup for the 2nd Varsity 8 with a time of 7:28.5. The Lightweight 4 was sixth in the Grand Final of the Jim Buckalew Cup with a time of 8:45.1.
In the novice races, MSOE's Novice 4 'A' crew took fifth in the Grand Final of the Don Rose Cup with a time of 8:17.2 after taking second in its qualifying heat. The 'B' crew was fifth in the Petite Final with a time of 8:39.5. In the Novice 8, the Raiders qualified third and finished ahead of Kansas in fifth place of the Paul Springer Cup Grand Final with a time of 7:31.3.
Rounding out the grand finalists was the Women's Lightweight 4, which took second to Northwestern with a time of 9:26.5.
MSOE placed ninth out of 17 teams at the MACRAs with 17 team points.
The Raiders also sent some crews to the Devil's Lake Regatta on Saturday, competing against Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Varsity 4 'A' race ended in a draw after a collision near the finish, with each of the teams recording an official time of 7:00.0. MSOE then took third in the Varsity 4 'B' race with a tie of 7:26.76. The first entry from Wisconsin won the heat with Minnesota taking second.
MSOE returns to the water May 11 at the Dad Vail Regatta.
