MILWAUKEE – Senior Jamie Spanbauer knocked down five 3-pointers to spark the MSOE women's basketball team in a 54-43 victory over Mount Mary Tuesday night at Hotchkin Arena.
The Raiders (2-0) got into a rhythm when their three-pointers started to fall in the second quarter as they pulled away from the Blue Angels (3-2).
Spanbauer finished with a game-high 15 points and led the defense with three steals and four blocked shots. Senior Rachel Ruona joined her in double-figures scoring with 10 points off the bench.
Erica Williams paced Mount Mary with 15 points and nine rebounds. Ty'Nika Bentley chipped in 12 points in just 14 minutes off the bench.
Mount Mary held one lead in the game at 5-4 at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter before a 6-0 run gave the Red & White the lead for good. MSOE would lead 12-9 heading into the second quarter where it hit on 5-of-9 from beyond the arc on its way to opening a 31-19 lead 1:39 before halftime. Spanbauer was responsible for three of the treys during the quarter.
The Raiders then built on their halftime advantage of 31-22 by opening the second half on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 45-24 lead on another Spanbauer three-pointer.
MSOE held strong, with senior Samantha Brooker hitting a layup to make it 54-35 with 6:27 remaining in the game. While the offense did stall for the remainder of regulation, the defense held strong and the Blue Angels were only able to get as close as the final 11-point deficit.
The Red & White shot 37 percent on the night, hitting on eight of its 24 three-point attempts. The team also came away with 14 steals and blocked eight shots. MMU finished the game at 38.8 percent from the field, attempting just six 3-pointers with a pair of makes. The visitors were forced into 25 turnovers in the game.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday, kicking off NACC play at Rockford.
