CHICAGO – The MSOE women's basketball team jumped out to a 20-5 lead after one quarter and held off Illinois Tech down the stretch to post a 52-35 victory Tuesday evening at the Keating Center.
The Raiders (9-8, 7-6 NACC) were able to shake off a tough third quarter to outscore the Scarlet Hawks (0-17, 0-13 NACC) 13-6 in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.
Senior Jamie Spanbauer scored 17 points with nine rebounds to lead the way. Junior Kayla Barreto added 12 points on the offensive end while senior Samantha Brooker blocked five shots and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the defensive efforts.
Erin Efimoff led IIT with 17 points. Shannon O'Donnell chipped in 12.
MSOE led wire-to-wire, jumping out early with a 16-2 run to close out the first quarter.
The lead was extended to 31-18 after halftime before the hosts were able to get a foothold in the third quarter. While the Raiders shot just 2-for-13 in the period, he Scarlet Hawks forged a 16-8 scoring advantage and pulled as close as six before sending the game to the fourth quarter at 39-29.
The Red & White saw its shots start to fall once more and was able to pull away at the end. IIT was within 42-33 with 5:41 remaining in the game when the Raiders pulled away with a 10-2 run to close out the game.
MSOE finished at 33.3 percent shooting for the night, though converted just 4-of-21 three-point attempts. The team was strong elsewhere, finishing 10-for-14 at the free throw line, garnering a 48-34 rebounds advantage, blocking eight shots, and committing a season-low 10 turnovers.
Illinois Tech was limited to just 26.8 percent shooting and came up empty on six 3-point attempts. The hosts also went to the free throw line just eight times with five made.
The Raiders continue a busy week with a return to the floor Thursday when they host Rockford.
