Women’s Volleyball Opens 2018 with Two Wins

LAKE FOREST, Illinois – Junior Allie Laurent missed a triple-double by one kill in a five-set win over Carroll and the MSOE women's volleyball team swept past Manchester in the season as it opened the season with a pair of wins at the Lake Forest Invitational Friday night Sports & Rec Center.

The Raiders (2-0) topped the Pioneers (1-1) 23-25, 25-16, 28-30, 25-21, 15-13 before getting a break and returning with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 sweep of the Spartans (0-2).

Laurent got her first season as the primary setter off to a tremendous start, notching nine kills, 30 assists, and 12 digs against Carroll. She did not commit an attacking error in 17 attempts for a .529 attack percentage.

She was second on the team in kills in the match, as senior Hannah Pekarek posted a double-double of 11 kills and 22 digs. Senior Shelby Borchardt posted a team-high 27 digs in the match.

Sydney Wilkins led the Pioneers with 10 kills and 18 digs.

MSOE attacked at a .087 clip with 41 kills on 173 attacks. The defense was up to the task with 88 digs and 12 blocks (nine solo) in the match. Senior Heather Dukat tallied five service aces in the match as the team finished with 11. Carroll hit .091 with 51 kills while registering 82 digs and six blocks.

In the nightcap, the Raiders clicked on all cylinders in handily getting past Manchester. They hit .150 with 26 kills while tallying 39 digs and another seven blocks over just three sets.

Pekarek hit .381 on the way to nine kills and nine digs. Senior Elsey Kohlmann finished with seven kills on .385 attacking.

The Spartans were held to a -.013 hitting percentage on the night.

The LFC Invite continues Saturday with MSOE taking on St. John Fisher at 10 a.m. and Loras at 2 p.m.
