Women’s Volleyball Splits Five-Game Thrillers on Day Two

LAKE FOREST, Illinois – The MSOE women's volleyball team found themselves on both ends of five-set thrillers Saturday on the second day of the Lake Forest Invitational, opening with a win over St. John Fisher before falling to Loras by the slimmest of margins.

The Raiders (3-1) prevailed over the Cardinals (0-4) 25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 15-9, before an epic showdown with the Duhawks (4-0) ended 25-23, 25-27, 25-21, 24-26, 19-17.

Senior Hannah Pekarek had a tremendous day, nearly posting two 20/20 performances. She finished with 18 kills and 25 digs against SJFC before tallying 20 kills and 22 digs in the second contest.

In the opener, senior Heather Dukat also had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 assists while senior Shelby Borchardt matched Pekarek with 25 digs. Freshman Quinn Borchert led the line up front with eight blocks to go with seven kills.

MSOE hit .113 for the match on 48 kills while posting 97 digs and 13 blocks defensively.

The Cardinals were limited to just .045 and were led by Alea Steigerwald's 15 kills and 14 digs. Izzy Smith added 10 kills and 18 digs.

In the second match, the Raiders went toe-to-toe with the Duhawks, hitting .163 with 52 kills. Pekarek hit .308 in the match with just four errors among 52 attacks.

Freshman Italia Fields had 13 kills and senior Elsey Kohlmann finished with eight in the match.

Laurent was named to the five-player all-tournament team. She averaged 7.11 assists and 2.56 digs per set. She also chipped in 16 kills over the four matched while hitting at a .265 clip.

MSOE returns to the court Tuesday, hosting Ripon in its home-opener.
