MILWAUKEE – Freshman Italia Fields had a team-high nine kills and senior Elsey Kohlmann finished with seven blocks to lead the MSOE women's volleyball team to a 25-19, 29-27, 25-21 victory over Ripon Tuesday night at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (4-1) and the Redhawks (2-2) struggled to get their offense on track but the home side came away with the win thanks to a strong presence on the block.
In addition to Kohlmann's nine blocks, senior Hannah Pekarek added six as the Red & White racked up 11 (two solo, 19 assists) over just the three sets. Pekarek finished with just seven kills but added 22 digs, topping the 20-dig mark for the fourth time in five matches this season.
Emily Allard posted a match-best 10 kills for Ripon.
Four-point runs in the beginning and again at the end of the first period set MSOE up for a good night as it fended off a late 8-3 run from the Redhawks to take the opening frame.
Ripon then looked like it would pull even in the second game, opening an 18-12 lead late. The Raiders pulled within one at 18-17 before RC scored four-straight points for a 22-17 edge. Once again, MSOE came calling, rattling off seven consecutive points to hit set point at 24-22. The visitors would rebound to force extra points but a Pekarek kill and block by Kohlmann and junior Sarah Williams clinched the set.
In the final game, the Redhawks took an early five-point advantage before the Red & White eventually pulled close and took the lead for good late.
The Raiders helped Ripon to just -.053 hitting on the night but was just in the positive at .009.
MSOE returns to action Friday, hosting the first day of the MSOE Invitational. The team gets started with its first match at 3 p.m. against UW-River Falls.
