FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – The MSOE women's volleyball team nearly overcame a 2-0 deficit, forcing a fifth set, before falling to Marian, 25-21, 25-13, 19-25, 17-25, 15-11, in the NACC opener for both teams Wednesday night at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Raiders (5-5, 0-1 NACC) were hitting negative over the first two sets before storming back on the Sabres (3-5, 1-0 NACC) with a .273 attack percentage over the third and fourth games to force a fifth set.
Jamie Schrauth posted a match-best 22 kills and Alexandra Meidl added 12.
The opening set was made up of several large streaks both ways, with the Red & White striking first with the opening five points. Marian rallied in a big way with the next 12 points of the match. MSOE rebounded 8-2 before a 9-3 run the other way made it 23-16 to MU. The Raiders came back with five of the next six points before the Sabres capped the set with a point. They then put game two out of reach early with a 16-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
MSOE went to work in the third set, breaking open an 11-10 game with five straight points. Then, after a 3-1 spurt for MU, the team went six-straight points to open a 22-13 lead. The Sabres did make it interesting avoiding four-straight set points before the Raiders picked up the win.
That momentum carried over into the fourth game for the Red & White, as the squad opened on a 9-3 run. Marian would pull within three before a pair of 4-0 runs put the set out of reach and sent the match to its fifth frame.
In the decisive fifth set, the Raiders went on a 5-1 run early and led 11-7 before Marian stormed back. The home team rattled off eight-straight points to claim the set and escape with the victory.
After righting the ship, the Red & White finished at .076 attacking for the match against .112 for the Sabres. MU was effecting on defense, registering 66 digs to 47 for MSOE and 10 blocks.
The Raiders are back in action this weekend at the Carthage Invitational. The tournament gets underway with a single match against the host Lady Reds.
