ROCKFORD, Illinois – The MSOE women's volleyball team hit .247 as a team to handily sweep Rockford 25-19, 25-14, 25-12 in a NACC match Tuesday evening at the Seaver Center.
The Raiders (6-8, 1-1 NACC) snapped a six-match losing streak by putting together their best hitting performance of the season at the expense of the Regents (4-9, 0-2 NACC).
Senior Hannah Pekarek and freshman Quinn Borchert led the way with eight kills each, combining to hit .467 as a tandem with just one error apiece in a combined 30 attacks. Freshman Italia Fields added seven kills, as well.
Emily Johannes led Rockford with seven kills and Maddison Hiland chipped in six.
The opening game set the stage for a tight match as the teams went back-and-forth and sat tied at 19-19. It was a trend that continued in each set, as the Raiders rattled off large runs to put the score out of reach.
Pekarek broke the opening-game tie with a kill and kick-started a 6-0 run to claim the set. MSOE then hit a match-best .367 in the second frame, breaking open another tight score with a back-breaking run. This time, the Red & White led 11-10 before scoring nine of the next 10 points to take a commanding lead at 20-11. It then closed with three-straight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set of the night, it was 10-9 MSOE before a 10-1 run quickly made it 20-10. Laurent served four-straight aces at one point. RU registered two of the next three points before another 3-0 run put an end to the match.
The Raiders hit over .200 as a team for the second time in three matches, averaging 11 kills per set (33 total) with just 11 errors in 89 attempts. They also amassed a season-best 12 service aces, led by junior Allie Laurent's six and four from senior Heather Dukat. Meanwhile, RU hit .023 for the match.
MSOE returns to the court Saturday at Concordia Wisconsin.
