Women's Volleyball Can't Sustain Hot Start on Senior Night

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's volleyball team came out on fire on Senior Night but could not sustain the intensity in falling to Wisconsin Lutheran 14-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-18 Friday night at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (9-15, 3-8 NACC) dominated the opening set before the Warriors (16-8, 7-3 NACC) caught fire late in game two.

Seniors Hannah Pekarek, Heather Dukat, and Shelby Borchardt led the way on the night. Pekarek notched 10 kills and 14 digs while Dukat registered eight kills and 10 digs. Borchardt tallied 24 digs on the night in just four sets.

Mercedes Pye led WLC with a match-high 15 kills to with 14 digs. Carly Heuer had 10 kills.

MSOE came out of the gates on fire, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the night. Another 5-1 run opened up a 15-5 advantage. The Red & White refused to allow the visitors to mount much of comeback and eventually closed out the frame with the final three points.

After a tight start to game two, the Raiders overcame a 10-8 deficit with an extended 11-3 run to open a six-point lead.  Their advantage sat at five points at 22-17 before WLC got going with a back-breaking 10-3 run to rush past MSOE and even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Wisconsin Lutheran broke an 8-8 tie with a 6-1 run. It's lead peaked at six before the Raiders rallied back within three at 20-17. That would be as close as they would get. The Warriors carried that over into the fourth set, rattling off an early 6-0 run before scoring 6-of-7 to open a 21-14 lead it would not relinquish.

MSOE hit .111 on the night with 37 kills against 21 errors in 144 attacks. The team attacked at a rate of .276 in the opening set but was unable to reach that standard in the next three frames. Wisconsin Lutheran had 52 kills in 161 attacks and finished at .124.

The Raiders have the weekend off before closing out the home portion of its schedule Wednesday against Lakeland.
