Baseball Hangs in there at Division I Milwaukee in 5-2 Loss

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE baseball team traveled across town to take on Division I Milwaukee Thursday, suffering a 5-2 defeat at Henry Aaron Field.

The Raiders (17-15) led 1-0 but were done in by a four-run second inning by the Panthers (16-19).

Freshman Julian Sonn went 4-for-4 in the game and collected MSOE's lone RBI. Meanwhile, freshman Kyle Jablonski turned in a strong pitching performance with 5.2 innings of relief, conceding just an unearned run.

Freshman Justin Bickman and senior Ryan Newman led off the game with back-to-back singles to get the ball rolling for the team's first run. Despite a double play canceling out Newman, Bickman advanced to third. Sonn then followed with an RBI single to right field to score Bickman and get the Raiders on the board.

Freshman Mason LeBreck (1-2) got the start on the mound and retired the first five hitters of the game before running into trouble. A single and an error followed by another single plated the first run. Then, later in the inning, Joey Scaffidi hit a three-run home run to make it 4-1 to the Panthers.

The home team added an unearned insurance run in the second inning.

MSOE struggled to get anything going after its first inning until the fifth frame when it capitalized on some UWM miscues. Junior Kyle Davis singled to lead off the inning and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Then, two passed balls allowed him to move up to third and score without necessitating a base hit.

LeBreck threw 2.0 innings and allowed three hits and a walk while striking out one. Jablonski started the third inning on the mound and struck out five in his outing. He worked around five hits and a walk to keep the Raiders in the game. Junior Matt Mohapp was called on to get the last out of the eighth inning and did so with just one pitch.

Newman and freshman Nick Stricker finished with two hits each as MSOE outhit the Panthers 10-8.

The Raiders return to league play this weekend, starting with a doubleheader against Lakeland Saturday in their home finale.
