MILWAUKEE – Junior Evan Kearns scored two goals to give the MSOE hockey team a 2-1 lead but Babson stormed back to hand it a 4-3 loss Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (4-7-2) shook off an early goal with the equalizer just 44 seconds later but the Beavers (9-3-1) scored four-straight goals to seize the lead for good.
In addition to Kearns' pair, freshman Jack Nickels picked up his first collegiate goal late in regulation to pull the Red & White within one. Sophomore Garrett Gintoli also registered three assists in the game.
Babson got on the board just 2:09 into the game before Kearns made it 1-1 at 2:53 off assists from Gintoli and sophomore Jeff Makowski. Kearns then pulled MSOE into the lead at 15:39. Gintoli once again played facilitator while freshman Ryan Vlaisavljevich notched his first career point with the other assist.
The Beavers struck for two goals in the second period and made it 4-2 at the 12:07 mark of the third period.
Nickels pulled a goal back for the Raiders right off a face-off at 13:39, giving his team second life. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Red & White would get in the game. MSOE pulled its goalie for the last 1:01 of regulation but was unable to find the equalizer.
Sophomore Rock Boynton made 23 saves in the game.
The Raiders held a 41-27 shot advantage but came up empty on five power plays. They were whistled for just two infractions in the game, successfully kill off each of Babson's man advantages.
MSOE returns to the ice Thursday at Marian in a return to NCHA play.
