MILWAUKEE – The MSOE rowing team won nine races at the Milwaukee Open Regatta Saturday morning on the Milwaukee River, including a first-ever women's race.
The Raiders served as hosts for the event and added a second-place showing in the 10th race.
MSOE's varsity crews posted a pair of wins on the day, winning the Varsity 8's in 4:07 and by a margin of 14 seconds over Northwestern and 28 seconds ahead of Marquette. In the Varsity 4 'B' race, its crew won by 40 seconds over Marquette.
Northwestern prevailed in a tight Varsity 4's 'A' race, as all three boats finished within 10 seconds of each other. NU went 4:23 to edge the Red & White by four seconds, which in turn beat MU by three seconds.
The Raiders were a perfect 5-for-5 in Novice/JV races, beating Marquette in the Novice 4's 'A' race by 12 seconds, the 'B' race by 41 seconds, and the JV 4's 'B' race by 1:49. In the Novice 8's, MSOE finished 11 seconds up on second-place Northwestern, then 12 up on the Wildcats in the JV 4's 'A' race.
With the emergence of a women's club rowing team on campus, the Raiders' novice roster features several female coxswains that feature with the club crew. This group gave the program its first entrants into women's races and did not disappoint. The novice crew won the Women's 4's race in 5:07, beating the St. Norbert Varsity by 10 seconds. Then, the group made up a Mixed 4's with some male rowers and won in 5:44, beating the Green Knights. by 33 seconds.
There was also a Women's 8's race won by St. Norbert, with MSOE rowers competing a boat with rowers from SNC.
The Raiders hit the water next Saturday at the Madison Regatta.
