Softball Back To Winning Ways Against Aurora

MILWAUKEE – Emily Wiederholt (Cuba City, Wis. / Cuba City) was excellent once again and Lorrin Pondo (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) was able to get out of a late inning jam, as the two pitchers helped the MSOE Raiders sweep Aurora on a windy Saturday afternoon at the MSOE Athletic Field.

Game One (6 innings)
Aurora – 1

Game Two
Aurora – 2

Emily Wiederholt has been on such a tear lately, that whenever she gets the call to start, there is an expectation that another win is on the way. This afternoon was no exception. The MSOE (16-8, 7-3 NACC) hurler went all six innings, giving up just five hits while surrendering one earned run on her way to her sixth win of the season. On the offensive end, the Raiders broke the game open in the bottom of the second, tagging the Aurora (14-12, 6-4) starter with five runs on six hits. Four different Red & White players picked up an RBI in the frame, including an Amanda Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill. / McHenry West) two out single that plated both Emily Snow (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan) and Rachel Ziemba (South Elgin, Ill. / South Elgin). Three RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth enacted the mercy rule, giving the Raiders the 9-1 game one victory.

Game two was a little bit closer. The Raiders started the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third, two of which crossed home thanks to a Kara McKenna (Downer's Grove, Ill. / South) double. MSOE added some much needed insurance with a run in the bottom half of the sixth, sending the game into the final frame with a 4-1 lead. That's were things got interesting. After starter Lorrin Pondo got the first out on a strikeout, a Spartan single got the bats started. The second out would shortly follow before the next three batters reached to load the bases. Thankfully Pondo was able to punch out the last foe of the afternoon for the 4-2 win.

Consistency has been key for the Raiders, as you would have to go all the way back to last year to find their last three game losing streak.

Emily Snow – 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs
Amanda Manssen – 3 hits, 3 RBIs
Kara McKenna – 2 hit, 3 RBIs
Emily Wiederholt – 6.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs allowed, 9 strikeouts, 5 hits

The Raiders will take on Benedictine next, but not on the original day that it was supposed to be played on. Due to a threat on inclement weather, the Raiders and Eagles will now play on Tuesday, April 16th at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm instead of tomorrow afternoon.
