WHITEWATER, Wis. – The MSOE women's volleyball team started the young season 1-1 on Friday, as they participated in the UW-Whitewater Invitational. This morning was their third and final game of the opening weekend, but the Red & White just couldn't get it going against NACC foe Lakeland in a non-conference matchup on Saturday morning.
MSOE – 0 (21, 19, 12)
Lakeland – 3 (25, 25, 25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one was a back and forth affair, with each team returning to play after a long day of action on Friday. MSOE (1-2) was able to hold a marginal lead early, holding one as late as 9-8. A 5-0 Lakeland run shot the Muskies ahead, and while the Raiders were able to take the lead back in the late stages of the game at 21-20, Lakeland went on another 5-0 run to seal the first victory.
The second frame was a carbon copy of the first early on, but once again a Muskies run put the Red & White in a hole. However, this time they were not able to climb out of it. LU won eight of ten points in the middle of the set, putting enough distance between them and MSOE for their second straight win of the morning.
Unfortunately, playing three games in less than 24 hours took its toll on the Raiders. Set three saw MSOE hit -.280 thanks to 11 attack errors. That combined with four service errors allowed Lakeland to move to 2-1 on the young season, while MSOE falls to 1-2 in part to the 25-12 defeat.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Lady Raiders will get some much-earned rest before returning to play. When they hit the court next, it will be in the familiar confines of Hotchkin Arena where they will take on Benedictine in the first game of the MSOE Invite. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm
