MILWAUKEE – It was day two of the MSOE Invitational, as the women's volleyball squad prepared to try and even up their record at their home tournament. Unfortunately, they were only able to salvage a 1-3 record on the weekend, but another two fiercely fought games show that the program is on the right track.
Lake Forest – 20, 21, 25, 25, 12
MSOE – 25, 25, 10, 14, 15
Wheaton – 25, 25, 25,
MSOE – 22, 20, 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
Match one of the afternoon could have easily been done in three sets. MSOE (2-5) won the first two, with each one seeing the Raiders rally off three or more point on numerous occasions. The young group showed its age however, as Lake Forest (4-4) rallied back to win the third and four set in convincing fashion. A relatively untested team, the fifth and final set would show what they were made of early on in the 2019 season. The Red & White did not disappoint, climbing out of an early 3-1 deficit to win the last eight of 12 points for their second victory of the season.
After Lake Forest fell to Wheaton (6-1), it was the Raiders turn to silence the Thunder. The Red & White battled in each set but were undone by poor hitting. 19 attack errors and a .090 hitting percentage were just too much against a veteran team that hit .205 and had 35 kills. That isn't to say that MSOE weren't fighters in the first and second contests before they ran out of gas. The Raiders hung right with Wheaton in each of the first two sets, leading or tying late in both, but they were overpowered in the 3-0 loss.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders will take the next few days off as their student-athletes head into their first week of classes. They will return to the court next Friday against Beloit and Saint Mary's (Minn.) at the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational starting at 3:00 pm.
